Kids Fine Art Series
Drawing, Painting, Clay, oh my! | Exploring the Kid’s Art Series at The Art House
Ever seen our signs, blaring “Now Enrolling Kid’s Fine Art Series” from the side of A1A?
How about the social media posts featuring small hands sketching outlines for self portraits, or rolling clay coils into functional cereal bowls?
Maybe you’ve just passed our neon pink Open Studio sign and wondered what the Art House is.
Whatever led you here, chances are you’re curious about what we can offer the budding artist in your life.
Over the three years since we opened our doors, we’ve developed an exceptional Fine Art Series for kids and teens. We offer homeschool and after school classes. Each semester, our students are guided through 6 weeks of drawing, 6 weeks of painting, and 6 weeks of clay work with projects developed and taught by our art program director, Natalie Novak, MFA Studio Arts.
Projects are tailored to each group’s skill level, with enough fun, time, and instruction mixed in to challenge our students and help them progress as artists.
Our intro class, Art 100, lays the groundwork for our beginner artists, teaching them the foundations of fine art, emphasizing observational skills, hand-eye coordination, experimentation, and confidence in creative expression. We recommend this class for ages 5-8, but also have a class specifically for 8 and older. We want to meet your kids where they are, no matter when they begin their art journey.
Level two, or Art 200, builds the skills that are established in Art 100, while also encouraging this group to dive deeper, developing their creative voice alongside their technique. Students in this level learn the artistic process from ideation to execution. Projects are more complex, encouraging creative risk taking and introducing foundational art theory to help students make more intentional artistic choices. This course is recommended for ages 8 and older, who have taken Art 100 or have previous experience.
The next level of our Kid’s Fine Art Series is Art 300, where artistic vision is honed. This course fluctuates with each class. Students work to develop their personal style, and create a cohesive portfolio of work they can carry forward through their artistic endeavors. Students will learn about historical and contemporary artists, and begin developing their voice within a wider scope of art and artistic expression throughout history. This course is designed for those who have taken Art 100 and Art 200, and who have a solid foundational understanding of fine art, typically ages 9 and older.
Whichever course your little artist is a part of, each semester culminates in an art show, where they can showcase their work to friends and family, alongside their peers. Here they can choose to speak about their work, or listen to their fellow artists speak on theirs. We believe learning to put their work out into the world is a valuable skill that can help them in so many ways.
We’re honored to host the creativity of St. Augustine’s children, watching them grow their skills, gain artistic confidence, all while building social skills. While each course has a recommended age, or age group, the ages in each class vary greatly. We’re interested in the skillset your kids have developed more than the number. Reach out with any questions, we’re happy to help!
